new stuff

Not all of these have taken effect yet, but they should be on the site within the next hour or two. :)

Bugfixes

  • The text selection bug in Horizon (if you're using either Internet Explorer or Safari) is fixed.
  • Going to http://communityname.livejournal.com/tag (without the trailing slash) will now actually take you to the community's tag page
  • Comment emails for comments you post (through the notifications system) now use "Comment you posted" as the subject line
  • Fixed the links in Horizon when you're logged out (they sometimes would point to invalid pages)
  • Dropdown menus (such as the "Work as user" menu) won't overlap the menus in Horizon (in Internet Explorer)
  • Fixed the site map so it wouldn't display errors if you're logged out
  • Dealing with improper page display when you have a small amount of text (it would overlap the userpic sometimes)
  • Fixing the link to the Guiding Principles on the site map so it links to the right place
  • EDITED TO ADD: Hovering over a userpic in Horizon with Firefox should display the username/keywords again

Updates/Enhancements
  • EDITED TO ADD (I forgot!): The notifications system is now open to all users!
  • Standardization of URLs: all communities will redirect to http://community.livejournal.com/communityname/, and all syndicated feeds will redirect to http://syndicated.livejournal.com/samplefeed/. Users whose usernames begin or end with an underscore will redirect to http://users.livejournal.com/_username/. (Everyone else will still be at http://username.livejournal.com.)
  • After account creation, users are taken to the Edit Profile page, rather than the interstitial "here's your URL, go fill out your profile" page
  • Moved the interests and bio sections on the Edit Profile page further up on the page, and added suggested "starting" interests so people can check them off and add them to their list, if they want.
  • Adding default subscriptions for new users: they get notifications for comments, official LJ announcements, and friendings by default (they can, of course, always change their settings). Doesn't affect existing users at all.
  • Changes to the text of the invite a friend email
  • Moving the placement of Frank on the main LJ page
  • Adding a bunch of links to the site map that were accidentally removed a few weeks ago
  • Adding the thumbtack icon to the userinfos of syndicated feeds

Dropdown menus (such as the "Work as user" menu) won't overlap the menus in Horizon

They worked fine for me. Was it something browser related?

Ditto on the thanks here. I'm a compulsive highlighter and not being able to do that was driving me insane. Thanks for taking the time to fix it!

Yay for highlighting via click-and-drag in Internet Explorer and Safari when view pages in the Horizon site scheme.

Now what about pages using the 3 Column style? :)

"Adding default subscriptions for new users: they get notifications for comments, official LJ announcements, and friendings by default (they can, of course, always change their settings). Doesn't affect existing users at all."

Which method? Mail or simply inbox?

Both mail and inbox, for new users.

If you run into other bugs with any of the things changing today, please feel free to comment here and we'll look into it.

I don't know if this is a bug related to the changes or what, but I created a new community today and without really paying much attention I accidentally selected for it to be a Sponsored account, which I don't actually want. I want to switch it back to a Basic account, but when I go to the page specified in the FAQ to change it, I can only make changes to my [info]grrliz account and nothing else. [There's not a menu that lets me choose which account I want to modify, which there usually is for everything else under the sun.] Not a huge deal, just weird.

added suggested "starting" interests so people can check them off and add them to their list, if they want.

This text:
Here are some popular interests, choose any by selecting the checkbox.
has a comma splice that's driving me (and surely any other editor-type who has noticed it) nuts. Is there any chance of getting someone to nip into the English text strings and fixing that quickly?

EDITED TO ADD (I forgot!): The notifications system is now open to all users!

Allow me to ask this: An user with a basic account by tracking community entries does also get the consequent comments on that entry by email, even if he/she doesn´t comment on the entry tracked?

[info]isabeau

September 22 2006, 01:31:17 UTC 5 years ago

Tracking community entries (i.e. the "Notify me when there's a new post in [community]" option) does not email comments to those entries. (For any account level, basic or plus or paid or permanent.) It just notifies on top-level entries.

People can, of course, choose to subscribe to each of the entries -- which they have to do manually for each one -- but until they do that, they won't get notification of comments. (They don't have to comment on the entry in order to track it, but they do have to go in and explicitly track it.)

My style has changed from my custom one to the site default over the last few hours

[info]magic_beans

September 22 2006, 09:01:09 UTC 5 years ago

If you leave it alone it may switch back on its own. If it's been a couple of hours and it hasn't, submit a support request to the Styles System category and we'll try and sort you out. Don't touch your customisation settings in the meantime though, if you tweak them you can lose what you had before.

with the new notification system, the old one doesn't always work. this is mostly true with replies to comments. some emails come several hours late, others, days. there doesn't seem to be a pattern.

when the new one is fully operational, will there still be an option to keep the current/old/whatever system? i rather like it. it's simple and i don't have to remembe3r to click the thumbtack.

Is this only in IE? Because it's not working in Firefox, and it used to work.

[info]burr86

September 22 2006, 20:51:01 UTC 5 years ago

It's working for me -- can you try clearing your browser's cache to see if that fixes it? If not, can you link me to a page where that's not working, and let me know what version of firefox you're using?

Scrolling by clicking the mousewheel (not sliding the wheel) does not work in Horizon. This is the reason why I switched back.

I love that the sitemap at the bottom of Horizon pages has been greatly slimmed down...don't know if that had been announced as an "enhancement," or whether it's been that way for some time and I only just noticed. In any case, thank you so much for that!
