Release #91.1
Me!
[info]markf
Release #91.1 is live on the site!

Changes:

  • We've reverted to the previous format of the lj-cut, and are evaluating the issues caused by r91's implementation of the scissors & dots.

  • When approving moderated entries, a moderator will only be able to include tags which the author of the entry has permission to add. This is to prevent the approval of posts which will unintentionally create new tags in communities which were added by users who lack the permission to create them. Once an entry is posted, it can still be edited to include any tags the editor has permission to include.

  • http://exampleusername.livejournal.com/tags/ now redirects to the correct tag page, http://exampleusername.livejournal.com/tag/, instead of returning a page not found error.

Bug fixes:

  • Some optimization of the way we use the Twitter API has been done, which should cause Twitter digest posts to work more consistently.

  • Domain mapping has been fixed to prevent logged in users from being directed to the LiveJournal login page when viewing mapped domains.

  • The link to the suspicious comments section uses the correct URL for this page again.

  • The Music field should now be able to handle basic HTML again.

Release #91 is live!

New Features:

  • Community owners, maintainers, and moderators can now edit the tags of moderated entries before approving the entry.

  • Who approved an entry in a community will now be shown beneath the subject line to community owners & maintainers. This feature is only available if the site default comment pages are being used.

  • There is now a small scissors icon - ✂ - to denote where an lj-cut has been used in an entry.

  • There are 3 new styles available at http://www.livejournal.com/customize/ - Blue Fence, Tasty-food, and Poker

Default comment scheme bug fixes:

  • Selecting a userpic with multiple keywords will no longer cause the comment to post with your default userpic (LJSV-1976)

  • Userpics can now be selected without the use of a mouse. Press Shift+tab until the userpic selector is highlighted, press enter, use the arrow keys to select the desired userpic, and press enter. You can also now use the arrow keys to select your desired userpic after clicking on the userpic selector to open it. (LJSV-2131)

  • Expanding very long comment threads in the site default commenting scheme will now properly expand the thread.

  • Expand links will now appear even if every comment in a thread is frozen.

  • Bold, italic, and underline buttons should now insert these tags in the correct places. (LJSV-2110)

  • "Your message was blank." errors no longer appear when hitting ctrl+enter twice.

Other bug fixes:

  • The Rich Text Editor will again show where you have inserted lj-cut and lj-spoiler tags.(LJSV-2145)

  • Settings for displaying CAPTCHAs in communities use the community's setting instead of the entry author's.

  • General display problems with image placeholders have been fixed

  • Formatting errors on the Sitemap have been fixed. (LJSV-1803)

  • "Share this" links have been fixed in styles where it was not functioning (LJSV-1320)

  • Journal titles should appear again for IE8 users in the system styles which weren't displaying them.(LJSV-2093)

Release #90
Me!
[info]markf
Release #90 is live!

New features:

  • Sticky posts: There's now an option on the Update page to "Make sticky post". Selecting this option will cause the entry to show up as the top entry to anyone who views your journal. This works for both personal journals and communities. You can only have 1 sticky entry in each journal; if you attempt to post a new entry with this option enabled, it will become the new top entry in your journal and the previous sticky entry will revert to being a normal journal entry. Your sticky post will have this image in the same section as your the security icon: Sticky Post Icon

  • Delayed entries: Changing the date & time of your entry to a time in the future will now cause the entry to be posted at the date & time you have entered rather than immediately posting it. You can view & manage the delayed entries you have scheduled to post at http://www.livejournal.com/manage/scheduled_posts.bml.

  • lj-spoiler tags: You can now add spoilers to an entry through use of the <lj-spoiler> tag. This is similar to an <lj-cut> in that it will hide all content inside of it, but it does not require a new page to load when clicked, and it works in both entries amd comments. You can customize the text by using the format <lj-spoiler text="Custom text goes here">. There is also this new button in the Rich Text Editor: Spoiler Icon which will cause all highlighted text to be placed inside an lj-spoiler tag.

  • Comment image placeholders: There is now an option at http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=display to have images in comments be replaced by a small placeholder image.

  • Popular communities: There is now a module on the homepage with a list of the 10 most popular communities (based on their Authority). Additional communities can be seen in this system at http://www.livejournal.com/ratings/community/?country=noncyr.

  • Latest entry: You can now view the latest entry in any user's journal by adding /latest to the end of the URL for their journal. Example: http://exampleusername.livejournal.com/latest will take you to the latest entry posted by [info]exampleusername.

Bug fixes:

  • Comments left by deleted accounts will display again, instead of incorrectly showing all comments as having been deleted.

  • Comment headers should no longer incorrectly be excessively large for comments with subject lines.

  • Bold, italic, and underline buttons in the comment form will now insert HTML in the correct places when used.

  • Userpics should display properly on your latest entries page & friends page when the option to use the old style comment pages is enabled in Minimalism.

  • Flexible Squares styles have had their comment page navigation/pagination options restored.

  • Email notifications now contain the correct URL for the options to screen or delete comments.

Other changes

  • The way Tokens are purchased in the LJ Shop has changed. There is now a slider to select how many Tokens you wish to purchase, or a text field to manually enter the amount (up to a maximum of 65,000). The cost of tokens is now a flat $1 per 100 tokens regardless of how many are purchased.

[edit] Known Issues

Release #89
Me!
[info]markf
Release #89 is live!

New Features:

  • Popular Entries: There's a new module on the LiveJournal homepage which highlights the most popular 25 community entries on the site. You can also visit http://www.livejournal.com/ratings/posts/ to scroll through up to 2000 entries. Further information about this feature is available at http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=303.

  • Purging of inactive accounts: As noted in news, inactive accounts are systematically being deleted if they have never posted an entry, and have not been logged into in the past 2 years.

  • Classic commenting system for Minimalism - A new commenting scheme has been developed for Minimalism styles which appears the way our previous default commenting scheme functioned. This option is available on the Customize journal page by enabling customized comment pages and enabling the "Show old style Entry page" option.

Bug fixes:

  • Searching userpics by keywords in the site default comment form is no longer case sensitive, and sorts results in alphabetical order.

  • The ability to use 'class' and 'id' HTML attributes in entries has been restored for paid & permanent accounts.

  • Twitter digest posts will no longer convert all subject lines into Cyrillic

  • Renaming your account should result in your Scrapbook account also being properly renamed.

  • Converting your account from a personal journal to a community will now set your account as the owner of the new community.

  • Fixed a bug which prevented community Owners/Maintainers from removing members in certain cases.

  • Comment threads in the Clean & Simple style indent properly again.

Other changes:

  • The S1 commenting form now has buttons for underline, bold, italic, and strikethrough.

  • S1 comment pages now display how long it has been since a collapsed comment was posted, and display the full date and time a comment was made for expanded comments.

Patch release 88.2
bunny - staff (text right)
[info]astronewt
A patch release has just been put out. It fixes a few of the major problems with expanding threads and other AJAX-y style problems with the new commenting form. We also wanted to let you know about the tickets that have already been filed regarding the commenting form (so you can see if problems you're seeing have already been reported or not) and to let you know of a feature that's now available for all account levels.

Editing comments is now available for all account levels
The lack of a Preview button on the new commenting form was reported both in beta and after the release. Since a Preview button isn't easily/quickly possible with the new form, we have made the ability to edit comments available to all account types. If you see a coding error in your comment after posting it, you will be able to edit the comment to fix the issue. Note that comments can be edited by the author up until the point the comment is replied to by another user.

Tickets that have been filed:
* LJSV-1966 - Expanding comment threads causes the page to time out.
* LJSV-1969 - Loading userpics in new commenting form causes timeouts, browser crashes.
* LJSV-1970 - Slower connections time out when loading new comment code.
* LJSV-1971 - Some Firefox users cannot comment with new comment form (may be add-on related).
* LJSV-1972 - Error message is blank when commenting anonymously in a friends-only/members-only post
* LJSV-1973 - Expanding comments causes jerky page movement in IE8
* LJSV-1974 - Arial in comment/entry pages does not match Verdana font in rest of site
* LJSV-1975 - Cannot switch user login type within the new comment form.
* LJSV-1976 - Some users cannot select userpic in new commenting form, or the userpic changes back to default. Cannot select userpic via keyboard only.
* LJSV-1967 - Spellcheck is missing from new commenting form.
* LJSV-1978 - "Quote" button does nothing in S2 commenting form
* LJSV-1979 - Userpics on site scheme comment forms after r88 no longer in alphabetical order
* LJSV-1980 - No "parent" link on new commenting scheme
* LJSV-1981 - Clicking comment links with the new comment form open causes in-progress comments to be lost
* LJSV-1982 - Reply to a comment on a site scheme comment page jumps to top instead of holding position.
* LJSV-1983 - New site scheme comment page is not friendly to mobile devices
* LJSV-1984 - Style 'Simple and Clean' no longer indents threaded comments after R88
* LJSV-1986 - Action buttons/links should appear always for each comment, not just on rollover.

Fixes contained in this patch
* While using ?style=mine, comment expanding should now function correctly. (LJSUP-10852)
* Several other AJAX-style problems with the new forms have also been corrected.

Issues still being discussed
* Many users concerned about the brightness/color-saturation/whitespace of the new commenting scheme, hindering readability and usage.
* Many users concerned about the loss of the text-based icon dropdown field. For users with large numbers of userpics and/or a slow internet connection, the browse function is very slow to load and find desired userpic. Some users reporting complete inability to use new browse function (keyboard only, screenreader, etc).

Additional Information
* We will be making an S2 commenting style that mimics the display of the original/previous S1 commenting pages. This new style will retain the ability to use/display comment subject lines. It will also not have the display issue that arises for long threads in the current S2 customized comment pages, where long threads are very 'squished' (a few words per line, etc) -- threads will display as they did in the previous commenting scheme. We are aiming to have this available within a few weeks.

If you are experiencing specific bugs with the new commenting form (either while leaving a comment or while viewing existing comments) that are not listed above, please file a Support ticket. Be sure to include a specific description of the problem, along with your browser/version information.

We are also planning to create a new S2 commenting style which will appear & function in the same way as the old site scheme commenting page to be included in the near future.

Release 86 has just gone live!

New Features / Improvements:

  • Community owners can now make use of the Google Analytics feature for their community. (Previously, this feature was only accessible for personal journals.) This feature is activated on the Extensions tab of the Settings dialog.

  • The contextual hover menu has been redesigned. The general look of the hover menu has been updated, and a few options have changed location. The functionality and wording of the ban options are now clearer in regards to their actual effect; there is now one checkbox for 'ban from my journal' and then a second checkbox for 'ban from my communities.' To ban a user from both locations, simply select both checkboxes. Also, the 'View journal | profile' line has been removed.

RTE update
Staff
[info]markf
We just wanted to let you know that we haven't forgotten about the issues with the Rich Text Editor, and it is still being worked on. We don't have any bug fixes to announce today, but we do have a release planned for next week which will resolve many of the remaining issues with the Rich Text Editor. Thank you for your continued patience, and watch for a post next week with further details.

Update on the Rich Text Editor
Me!
[info]markf
As a followup to last week's entry about the Rich Text Editor (RTE), we wanted to let you know what issues have been fixed, and which still remain.

Fixed:

  • Unable to remove/break a link in RTE post once the link is created. (LJSV-1724) [Note: There used to be a seperate button for this, but now the "insert link" button performs both of these functions. If a link has already been created, selecting that link and clicking the "insert link" button will break the link.]

  • RTE creates divs instead of paragraphs, causing unnecessary spaces. (LJSV-1723)

  • Can't easily remove an lj-cut created in the RTE.

  • Editing an entry with "Disable Auto-Formatting" in the HTML editor strips breaks. (LJSV-1735)

  • Line breaks removed when editing through RTE. (LJSV-1751)

  • If an lj-cut is added in RTE, the cut content is moved up to the beginning of entry for some users. (LJSV-1742)

  • Bold, italic, underline formatting in RTE applies differently with keyboard shortcuts than buttons. (LJSV-1752)

  • Backspace works as back button in RTE for some users -- add prompt message to warn.

  • Creating an lj-cut in the RTE automatically centers the text when it shouldn't. (LJSV-1753) [Note: This appears to still be occurring in some older versions of FireFox; we'd appreciate comments with what browser and version of it you are using if this is still happening to you.]

  • Cannot create lj-cut using the RTE in Opera. (LJSV-1754)

  • Reposted entry contains wrong video (LJSV-1286)

Remaining known issues:

  • Image resizing options are not working properly in RTE. (LJSV-1726)

  • Editing an entry with an lj-cut does not work correctly in RTE (LJSV-1779)

  • Tags field no longer pre-populating as you start to type. (LJSV-1778)

  • RTE overrides browser spellcheck. (LJSV-1749)

  • The dialog to select a Scrapbook image to insert in HTML editor is off the screen, unusable. (LJSV-1755)

  • Numbering button is not working correctly in RTE. (LJSV-1757)

  • Can't click insertion point to end of paragraph in HTML editor in Safari (LJSV-1729)

  • Add contextual window for Opera in RTE (right-click menu).

If there's any issue with the listed as fixed that isn't working for you, or any issue with the RTE which isn't listed, please comment!

Release 83.1

[info]markf

Release 83 is now live!

Features:

  • Spam protection is now available for your LiveJournal inbox in addition to comments! If you have enabled the Spam Protection setting, messages sent to your LiveJournal inbox which are suspected as being spam will be automatically moved to a Suspicious Messages folder. This feature works much like spam protection for many popular email services, and allows you to both mark messages as spam in your normal inbox, and mark messages in the Suspicous Messages folder as not spam.

  • We have updated the Rich Text Editor on our Update Journal and Edit Entries pages. The icons have been updated (see comparison below), and it now includes functionality to easily include the lj-like feature which you can use to allow others to easily recommend your entries on other services.

Old icons:
RTE (old)

New icons:
RTE (new)

Bug fixes:

  • Adding friends page content by tags:

    • Selecting tags in Internet Explorer no longer causes display errors.

    • Autocomplete now works correctly in Internet Explorer 8.

    • Fixed a bug which sometimes caused a JavaScript error to be returned when adding or editing friends.

    • Tag names are no longer duplicated in tooltips.

  • Clicking the repost button on an entry which contains an embedded video will no longer embed the wrong video in the reposted entry. (LJSV-1286)
  • Email addresses which use the .tel domain are no longer rejected. (LJSV-1688)

  • Opera users should no longer have difficulties posting entries with "Turbo" mode enabled.

Minor changes:

  • The Filter and Calendar features on the Navigation Strip must be clicked before displaying dropdowns instead of automatically displaying when hovering over them.

[Edit] Thanks for all the comments reporting problems with the release. We're working to resolve these issues, but here's our list of known issues:

Release #81 is here!

Features/changes:
  • We've added navigation options which allow you to more easily sort community entries by poster! The "sort by poster" option now appears under in the Navigation Strip if you are viewing a community, and will show you entries made by a specific user within that community. Additionally, when you are viewing a community, the menu which appears when you hover over a person's userpic will also include an option to view entries in that community by that poster.

  • We've incorporated a variety of buttons which can be used by to easily Recommend/Tweet/+1 entries on FaceBook, Google Buzz, Twitter, and vKontakte. Additionally, there is a button which allows others to donate LiveJournal Tokens to you. These buttons are not displayed by default, but can be added to any entry by adding an <lj-like> tag. You can also specify which subset of these services to include a button for. Example: <lj-like buttons="fb,go"> will only include buttons for FaceBook & Google Buzz. (codes: fb=FaceBook, go=Google, tw=Twitter, vk=vKontakte, lj=LiveJournal Donate). You can see an example of the <lj-like> feature at the bottom of this entry.

Bug fixes:

  • Journals should no longer randomly revert to the default style / return error 500s. (ljsv-1375 / ljsv-1628)

  • Some display issues with the Navigation Strip have been resolved.

Release #80 has arrived! Here's the information about the new features and bugfixes that are now live on the site:

Features/changes:
  • You can now have your friends page display content from journals and communities based on tags! You can set options to either show only entries with specified tags, or to exclude only entries with specified tags. If you add a friend or begin watching a community, you will be presented with these options. You can both add settings to existing friends and modify your defined settings on the Edit Friends page under the "selected Tags" column.
  • We have added a new type of identity account for Google. You can now use your Google account to identify yourself on LiveJournal. Google Identity accounts will appear with this custom userhead: Google image and will behave in the same way as other identity accounts.
  • There is now an Android tab on our Devices page.
  • Users who have enabled Comment IP logging will now also see the Country and City information of the commenter. This information is only visible to the journal owner, community owner/maintainers, or author of the entry if it is posted to a community with this feature enabled (only those who can currently see IP information). This feature is providing the publicly available geo-location associated with the IP address in the same way the "location" feature on our Update page currently functions.
[Edit] Message received! We're in the process of removing this change right now.
[Edit 2] The change is now live on the site; country and city information is no longer being displayed with the IP logging feature.
[Edit 3] New poll at http://lj-feedback.livejournal.com/16181.html regarding IP logging!

Bug fixes:
  • The "Share" button in the navigation strip now only appears on public entries. (LJSV-1581 & LJSV-1593)
  • Minor issues with the background image in the Early Morning style have been fixed.
  • The comment thread expander not working in some journals has been fixed.
  • The CSS on the nav strip should now properly override other CSS (LJSV-1585)
  • Deleting an anonymous comment from the suspected spam comment area will no longer result in being asked if you would like to ban the user. (LJSV-1584)
  • Syndicated accounts will no longer have the "Spam Protection" option enabled as there is no owner to review the auto-screened comments.
